een teken dat het somtyds in lager plaatsen meer sneewt als in hoger, door een andere expositie, of nabyheid van hogere bergen. tegen den middag frisse z:o:

Heavy dew. Very hot with light south-east breeze. Had a very sore throat and was listless. Drank a great quantity of tea. Departed west by north, all the time through the Langkloof. The same terrain. After a distance of two and a half hours passed the Dead-mens'- graves, or Murder, River,

the farm of a certain Strydom. Saw several Hottentot graves here which date, I am told, from the old time of the smallpox. After this it was a good hour to the Great Aapjes River, the farm of Olofsen, and then, for another hour, on to Small Aapjes River, Stefanus Ferreira’s, and after a further hour and a half I arrived and stayed at the farm of Pieter Ferreira on the Diep River and called Ongegund. All these rivers run into the Kaugga from the Outeniqua chain. Though it was very hot, I felt better. Found the wagon at Ferreira's. Heard that it very often snows heavily in August here, coming from the north-west and west, as well as south-west and south. It lies for two or three days and more. Took the height with the barometer and got 27 inches 5 tenths, a sign that it sometimes snows more on the lower places than on the higher.
