hope dat UWHWGb myne brieven en tekeningen wel ontfangen hebt. de eersten sond ik door de Heer halhed, neef van gouverneur hastings, en de anderen met een duits heer, capitein in Engelsche compagnies dienst, beiden op onse retourschepen na holland kerende. ben eergisteren van myne voorgenomene reise, na een seven maandige absentie, alhier geretourneerd. en houde dese voor de interessantste, ben tot by de briquas, die sig selven moetjoanaas noemen, terug gekeerd. de tydt permitteerd my niet particulariteiten te melden, dewyl het schip vertrekt. ik heb een vel en gansch schelet van een der grootste cameleopardalissen voor syne doorlugtigste Hoogheid medegebragt, sullende sulks ten eersten overgesonden worden met een exacte tekening. men heeft de taille van dit dier vergroot, zynde de grootsten tussen de 15 en 16 voet rynlands hoog, van kop, boven op, tot op de grond, regte lyn; synde seker een der wonderlykste dieren in de natuur; hebbe er meer dan honderd gesien en twe geschoten. hebbe eerst de westkust tot op de 28st graad, over oranjes riviers mond, gevolgd, en daarna het land ingegaan; alles is sonder enig ongeluk of siekte afgelopen. hebbende

ik een exacte kaart van het land gemaakt,
de overste Phren heeft my gisteren gesegt dat hy over een maand repatrieeert, dit nu seker synde, neme de vryheid my in UWHWGb: protectie te recommanderen tot die post. hebbe sedert myne komst in dit land alle exercitien als chef gecommandeerd en dus meer als chef, dan als capitein dienst gedaan. Sal UWHWGb met de eerste schepen, nader schryven, terwyl de eere hebbe my met de uiterste hoogagting te noemen

Your Honour,
I hope that your honour has received my letters and drawings. The first I sent via Mr Halhed, the nephew of Governor Hastings, and the other with a German gentleman, a captain in the service of the English company, both heading for Holland with our return-fleet. The day before yesterday after a seven-months’ absence I returned here from the journey I undertook. And I consider this the most interesting. I have been back as far as the Briquas, who call themselves Moetshoewanas. Lack of time does not allow me to give the details, as the ship is leaving. I have brought back for his most Illustrious Highness the skin and skeleton of one of the largest giraffes, and will send it at the first opportunity with precise drawings. The size of this animal has been exaggerated, the largest being between 15 and 16 Rhineland feet high, in a straight line from the head at top to the ground. These are surely the most amazing creatures in nature. I have seen more than a hundred and have shot two. I followed the west coast at first, up to the 28th degree, across the mouth of the Orange river, and then penetrated the interior; everything went without any accidents or ill-health.

I have made an exact map of the country.
The commander Phren told me yesterday that he will be repatriating in a month, and this being now certain I take the liberty of being recommended to the post through your Honour's protection. Since my arrival in this country I have commanded all exercises as chief, and thus as more than chief have done service as captain. I will write further to your Honour by the first ships, while having the honour to call myself with the greatest respect,
