Hope dat UWHWGB: de tekeningen en plans voor zyne doorlugtigste hoogheid, neffens enige tekeningen rakende de caffers en hottentotten, en die der dieren voor de Heer Alamand, door de Hr Halhed, passagier aan boord van het schip Ridderkerk, Capt: Sneijders, ongeschonden zult ontfangen hebben. de heer halhed is een kundig en exact man, dus wist ik geene betere gelegentheid. hier nevens hebbe de eere met de heer Mulder, Capitein in Engelsche dienst en een braaf man, nog enige zaken toe te zenden, namentlyk het gesigt der oranjes rivier daar ik gepasseerde jaar voor gestuit ben, voor zyne hoogheid; en onse duinmol hartebeest kwagga en rietrebok voor myn vriend Allamand, versoeke op het onderdanigst dat niemant er copie van mag neemen voordat de heer allamand aan wien de vellen gestuurd heb, zulks goed vind. de andere dieren, vogels, planten, etc: zullen volgen: dog doordien een copie moet houden, neemt zulks veel tydt. Hebbe de heer advocaat boers een copie van het geene voor zyne doolugtigste Hoogheid gesonden hebbe, besorgt om het aan de geheime commissie over te leveren. de Heer Gouverneur versoekt neffens my instantelijk aan zyne doorlugtigste Hoogheid dat terwyl hy eene volmaakter hippopotamus, die na de tekening aan welkers accuratesee niet behoeft getwyfelt te worden, kan opgeset worden, heeft, de andere aan Allamand voor het Cabinet van leiden, te geven. het is seer moejelyk so een vel wel te bewaren en te transporteren, ik heb er twe, een bul en koey voor myn vriend gehad, dog zy zyn beiden bedorven.

het gene ik, by het articul van de Steen deses lands, in my vorige brief, cos noeme, is by buffon, roc vif graniet of cailliou en grande masse genoemt. Over twe weken neme ik myne geprojecteerde reise weder aan, en zal by myne terug komst UWHWgb: er van verwittigen, verzoeken de geinformeerd te worden of alles wel overgekomen is. bevele my in UWHWGb: protectie, my met de diepste hoogagting en eerbied noemende, na myn compliment aan mevrouw fagel en de verdere vrienden versogt te hebben,

Sou ik de arme ingenhoven nog durven recommanderen ik hoop dat het niet nodig is hebbe onse caapse eland en blesmol nog kunnen klaar krygen, dus voege ik er die bij. UHWgb: kan Myn vriend allamand eens tonen het onderscheid tussen die gevaarlyke beschrevene caapse mol, en de reëlle, ik heb my braaf gediverteerde met de gedagten van een mol van by de vyf voet lang. desen sullen seker in het land van Gulliver de vinden zyn hebbe de heer hope versogt UWHWgb: enige saden, die zy E. gesonden hebbe, mede te delen.

Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of May 1779
Your Honour!
I hope that your honour will have received, undamaged, the drawings and maps for his most illustrious highness, as well as some drawings touching the Caffres and Hottentots, and those of the animals for Mr Allamand, from Mr Halhed, passenger aboard the ship Ridderkerk, Capt. Sneijders. Mr Halhed is an able and precise man, and I saw thus no better opportunity. In addition I have now the honour of sending some other things with Mr Mulder, a Captain in English service and a good man, namely the view of the Orange River where I encountered it last year for his highness; and our dune mole-rat, hartebeest, kwagga and rietbok for my friend Allamand. I ask most humbly that no-one be allowed to make a copy of them before Mr Allamand, to whom I have send the skins, gives assent. The other animals, birds, plants etc. will follow. But having to keep copies of these takes a lot of time. I have delivered to advocate Boers a copy of what I sent to his Highness so that he can hand it over to the Secret Commission. In addition the Lord Governor urgently entreats me that when his most Illustrious Highness has a more perfect hippopotamus – that can be stuffed following the drawing, the accuracy of which need not be doubted – he should give the other to Allamand for the Cabinet at Leiden. It is extremely difficult to preserve and transport such a skin. I had two for my friend, a bull and a cow, yet both were spoiled.

That which I called cos in my previous letter when expounding the stone in this country, is called roc vif, granite or caillu en grande masse by Buffon. In two weeks I will once more undertake my projected journey, and on my return will inform your Honour about it, requesting to be notified if everything has reached you in order. Being safe in your Honour's protection, in addition to having asked for my compliments to be given to Mrs Fagel and other friends, I remain with the deepest respect and esteem,

I hope that it is not necessary that I should yet dare recommend the poor Ingenhoven. Having managed to get our Cape eland and Cape mole-rat ready I enclose these as well. Your Honour can for once show my friend Allamand the difference between the dangerously described Cape mole, and the real one. I have much amused myself with the thought of a mole all of five foot tall. This will certainly be found in the land of Gulliver. I have asked mr Hope to share with you some seeds that his Excellency [the Governor] has sent.
