Object data

  • Place: The conical koppie known as the Vuilkop and the flat Perdeberg behind it are part of the Camdebo range. This view is taken looking across Swarte River from the farm currently known as Brooklyn some 20 kilometres south west of the modern town of Graaff-Reinet.
  • Date: 1776-1795
  • The view is identical to that in the drawing made by Johannes Schumacher for Hendrick Swellengrebel in 1776 showing the stock-farm of Hendrik Cloete managed by Johannes Swanepoel . See Hallema 1951, no.28; and Forbes 1965, pp. 66 and 115, and pls 14 and 26. It is possible that this is Schumacher’s preliminary sketch, done in preparation for the Swellengrebel drawing, which Gordon later acquired.

  • Size: h 25 cm × w 34.5 cm
