de vrouw uit dit huis is een hele heroine, en kan goed schieten. haar moeder is ene guilliaumè uit vrankryk, dog haar vader een amsterdammer Engelbregt genaamt, zy haat de franschen zeer. zy vertelde ons dat zy eens op een leeuw geschoten had, die haar na de schoot byna besprong, dog zy hem in huis en byna donker zynde ontliep, sprong de leeuw haar vervolgende in het strooyhuis van de veewagters hottentotten, dog met zyne voorpoten in het vuur springende en zig brandende sprong hy te rug, hy was even te voren door een hottentot, met een gift pyl in de poot geschoten daar men hem des anderen daags doodt aan vond. hoorde hier voor het eerst dat leeuwen selfs van de selfde trop, wanneer zy voor het stel doodgeschoten zyn en blyven leggen, door hunne makkers even gelyk de hyaenas, opgevreten worden. Pinar kwam te rug ook de hottentotten met het elands vlees, hoorden dat by beneden koegel fontein wy de oliphanten gepasseert waren.

The wife of the house is quite a heroine and can shoot well. Her mother is a certain Guillaumé from France, but her father is an Amsterdamer called Engelbrecht. She hates the French deeply. She told us that she had once fired at a lion and that it nearly leapt on her after the shot but, because she was in the house and it was almost dark she avoided it. Pursuing her the lion jumped into the straw hut of the Hottentot herders, but it jumped with its front paws into the fire and burning itself sprang back again. Just before this a Hottentot had shot it in the paw with a poisoned arrow, from which it was found dead the next day. Heard here for the first time that lions, even ones from the same pride, when they are shot dead in traps and left lying there will be eaten by their comrades just as hyenas do.
Pienaar returned as well as the Hottentots with the eland meat. Heard that we had passed by the elephants at Lower-Koegelfontein.
